It's uncommon, I've only known of one instance the dog had its vest & leash removed to "free" the dog. Person was arrested but I don't know the outcome. Was like 20 years ago or more.

I agree, too. Even if all she can give is a description, if this guy tries anything again and gets caught then he'll have this report against him. They'll see that he matches the description, commit a similar crime, and will probably look into seeing if it's the same guy (like having the woman do a lineup or something).

Also, the police might have been able to check security cameras or something and catch the person based off of a description.

Not as uncommon as you think. And I know in my situation and other people i know who have had people grab at the service dog's leash. We did not run off to the news to report or even bother with a police report. I know I learned to carry a camera to snap a picture of such offenders. Can't afford a cell phone , but the effect of pulling a camera out usually makes them beat feet away !!

Someone once attempted to take one of our guide dog puppies (Cashmere). Right as her raiser was coming out of the courthouse from jury duty, too! They just snatched the leash and attempted to start running.

Luckily, Cashmere hesitated and kinda just looked at her raiser like "what?" instead of going along. I don't know what happened to the person who attempted to take her, this story was retold at a club meeting. But yeah. It happens occasionally. X- P

The lady in the grocery store trying to give Cambrie commands pales in comparison to that story.

This actually happened to a friend of mine at one of the Walmarts in town. A woman grabbed her service dog by the collar and became irate. My friend fell to the ground and the woman actually spat on her and kicked her. Her dog is thankfully a large GSD and the dog did not follow. Far as I know the woman actually got jail time but my friend was very insistent in not publicizing. The media always finds a way to paint something so that way people can point ugly fingers at genuine victims. It scares me that PETA cult members walk among us. That's apparently what this woman was doing - saving my friend's mobility SD.

Another reason to train an emergency drop...

A very good recall would probably help in that situation, too.

Yeah I used to run into lots of animal rights people. Never had anything happen more than them getting a bit upset about it. Never had anyone free the dog physically though. Maybe it was just luck? I never really worried about it at the time.
