This story pulls a lot of things together for me.  I know this service dog team. They do a lot to raise awareness about disability. Rescue is extra-special. He was named (the program allows folks to name a SD in connection with fundraising) by firefighters in honor of a fallen colleague who drove a truck called "Rescue 1" and died heroically. Rescue's handler and her husband (Jess and Patrick) have done a beautiful job conducting themselves with grace after being thrust into the spotlight. When they speak publicly, they always comment that they should not be given any special consideration just because their trauma happened so dramatically and in the public eye. Jess has had terrible problems with her legs and I am beyond thrilled to see that she is able to work again as a nurse.

I found the thread here on SDC when the Boston Marathon Bombings happened, and appreciated everyone's concerns. I was on a work project in Washington State at the time, and it was very tough, hearing news reports from far away while my city was in crisis. The bomber was apprehended only a few miles from my house in Cambridge. And now I'm in New York, pretty near the site of this gala. It was so nice for me to learn that Rescue had some problems adjusting to the chaos of the city!  SD#3 will be glad to hear about it when he wakes up from his post-breakfast nap.

And finally, here's another spirit-lifter:  in 2014, Jess wanted to do something special for Patrick on Valentine's Day.  So she put a flashmob together.  The staff at NEADS was seriously challenged to get the dance moves right, so students from local colleges were recruited to be ringers.  It's an awfully nice little video:  https://www.bostonglobe.com/metro/2017/11/18/rescue-very-good-dog-named-country-best/zz4Jndp7uUcGTKOkm5YpJN/story.html
