Advice for new puppy owners
« on: March 27, 2012, 07:50:42 PM »
If someone you knew got a new puppy (their first) and you could give them only one sentence of advice, what would it be?

Do not let the puppy do anything you wouldn't want it to do when it's full grown; start training immediately and in a positive way; don't cuddle a dog that is scared, ignore it and let it work through it's issues.

How about, "Be very consistent in reinforcing the behaviors you want with genuine praise and in not giving the pup the opportunity to practice the behaviors you do not want."

I actually thought of another, but I'm going to hold off and see if someone else comes up with something along the same lines.

Dogs are social animals and unless you want an territorial and aggressive dog you must socialize them, the more people (s)he comes in contact with, the better.

Early fun training makes everyone, dog included, happier

Make training a fun game, (short sessions) and always end on a positive note.

Get them used to people touching their ears and paws, your veterinary professionals will appreciate it.

Keep a rolled up newspaper handy at all times

Before you all scoff at me and jump up and down, admit it, a rolled up newspaper can be a very effective training tool when used correctly.

For example, if the puppy chews up something inappropriate or has a housebreaking accident, bring the dog over to the destroyed object or mess, take the rolled up newspaper and hit yourself over the head as you repeat the phrase, "I forgot to watch my dog, I forgot to watch my dog!"

I like that one! haha! I hit my hand with the paper to startle him from doing something. I never hit my dog with anything.

Tough it up and take your pup out for the necessary potty breaks during the night.

Use the umbilical cord method--tie yourself top the pup. Saves your head bruises with that rolled up newspaper.

Though the rolled up newspaper was used here in this past week. I let 10 month old puppy sleep with me with my weighted blankets full of bean bag pellets, and then I slept in avoiding the pup who was up and ready to go (but patiently waiting). He was occupying himself by freeing the poly pellets from their cages. Lovely. That got me out of bed in a hurry. I'm glad I can sew and have a plan to repair it!

Love them enough to be firm when needed but always fair in your corrections.
