Chelmsford woman faces charges over dog
The Sun-7 hours agoShare
In a separate case involving her German shepherd, "Katie," Kopacz was charged with disobeying a dog order after she allegedly defied a Board of Selectmen order to confine and muzzle the dog. It was labeled a "dangerous dog" when it bit a neighbor and attacked another dog in February 2013.

Kopacz insists that Katie is not a dangerous dog, rather the dog is being trained as a service dog.

There was an incident with a dog named "Dutch".  He attacked his former owner.  It was a particularly savage attack.  In order to deflect responsibility, the owner claimed the dog was his "service dog".  He was a veteran - which made it particularly heinous - to claim that the dog was a "service dog" because "the law protects service dogs better than pet dogs".  A judge ordered the dog destroyed, which the owner disobeyed.  The dog was hidden - the dog was taken over state lines - it was a debacle.  And there was a faction of online people who bought into the dog and pony show this guy was putting on.

A quick google search of "dutch the service dog" will tell you all you want to know - and even more than you want to know.

One does not train a 15 year old dog to be a SD.  No dog attaching someone is qualified to be a SD. Duh.

The thing with Dutch, and possibly with this case (it appears to me) is that Dutch was never claimed to be a service dog until the owner thought it would help him beat the vicious dog rap.  AFTER the dog attacked someone and he realized he was at risk for losing the dog he decided to make Dutch a service dog.
