Midnight's dog tag look more like a rabies tag, but I don't know what exactly the SD tags look like in California.

I think they do look like regular rabies tags in California.  In Florida, they're practically the size of saucers!

He said he was from Oakland (or got the tag there) which is Alameda County. I've seen our county tags and that is not what they look like. They are HUGE and rectangular and blue.

I've only seen it once on a big pitbull that ran up to my dog off leash. My golden shrunk to the ground in a submissive way while the pit stood over him. His owner said his pit was being dominant, but was fine with other dogs. The guy pointed out the tag and said I could get one too, but didn't have to if I didn't want to.

Midnights tag was either a dog license tag or rabies. Unless they've changed the look of the tag over the years, I doubt it though.

California doesn't have a uniformed tag for SDs.  Each county tag is different with some being nicer than others.

Not all of the counties in Florida issue regular (registration) tags let alone SD tags (or at least they didn't back pre-2008).
My relationship with my SD is like a marriage.  In fact, my two-legged husband calls Scooter "The Other Man".

Ah, good to know, thank you. I understand why businesses are confused and don't even bother. I wouldn't either. I've had working dogs for 15 years and I still don't know what a service animal is, what a ESA is, who is allowed where and for why and/or how to indentify everybody.

I didn't know ESAs were allowed here, so as a business owner I would have asked someone to leave because I would have said ESA can't be brought in my store, only to find out they can and be sued. One county has one tag, the state has another, someone says the law says this, another says that. I'm as confused as the next person.

Up here all the tags across Ontario are the same for the year with a serial number.  Last year they were a blue "flower" and this year I think they are a red heart.  It contains all the info of the vet that administered the shots.

Makes it easier too if you find a stray with tags
