(Warning for dogs) Xylitol Sweetner

Xylitol
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xylitol

Quote:
Health concerns
Xylitol, like most sugar alcohols, can have a mild laxative effect at high doses. It has no known toxicity, though; people have consumed as much as 400 grams daily for long periods with no apparent ill effects. For canines, however, xylitol can cause serious ? possibly life-threatening ? problems. Dogs ingesting large amounts of products sweetened with xylitol may have a sudden drop in blood sugar, resulting in loss of coordination, depression and seizures within 30 minutes of consumption.

From VetInfo.com Site A Veterinary Information Service:

Sugarless Candies May be Poisonous for Dogs

Sugarless candies can be toxic to pets. Candies containing xylitol have been recognized by the National Animal Poison Control Center to be a risk to pets. This information was first published in July 2004. This compound can cause liver damage and death in dogs susceptible to being poisoned with xylitol. If your dog ingests sugarless candy it would be best to contact the NAPCC (1-888-426-4435). It is possible your vet will not be familiar with this source of poisoning as this information is fairly new and candies have not usually been associated with poisonings in dogs if they did not contain chocolate as the major ingredient.

Wow ... that is scarey ... we're a diabetic and have lots of food stuffs around the house that are sweetened with Xylitol, etc ... and Bailey gets the occasional treat from them ... especially if we've made cookies.  We're gonna stop doin' that for sure.

Try baking with splenda, it is made from sugar and it works real great in baking everything that is what we use when cooking and baking. also look for candies and treats made with splenda instead of the other sweetners.

Ya we have Splenda too ... soon to be the only artificial sweetener in the house.  We never even considered the possibility that the artificial sweetners could be harmful to Bailey.  She's gonna get her own supply of popsicles and freezies too, ours are all artificially sweetened.
