Fear and Anxiety in Dogs (non-SD)
« on: January 04, 2012, 06:52:53 PM »
I spent the night for New Year's at a friends house who has a rat terrier something or other mixie (about the same size as Maigee and they like each other).  We woke up in the morning and there was some heavy wind.  The dog was basically terrified, mouth open, panting/yawning, pacing, hiding, etc.  They explained it is pretty fearful of the sound of wind.  We were discussing different calming techniques, and I was just wondering what experiences people had with helping dogs with this?

The things I know of include:
Rescue remedy (I think Spectrum used this for the white dog she had whose name I can't remember)
Those pressure vests/shirt things
Some sort of plug-in like glade that has a calming affect

Any other suggestions or knowledge of what works that I could recommend?

Well, desensitization is probably the best for long-term management. I would suggest working with a trainer (in case they have no experience) and obtaining sound files of wind/storms and using that with training.
The decisions we make and the way we behave are what ultimately shape our character.

Ozzie, my brother Wayne's dog, had anxiety with rainstorms and after a hurricane when we had a lot of roofers in the area. The advice I got was to have the TV or radio on during the day.

It does work, I think the TV worked best - because if the TV was on and we arent't there, he knows we are coming back (we had only turned the tv off when we went to bed or left the house). I also think Ozzie liked watching "The Price is Right" because of the clappng and happy joyous people on it. He loves laughing, clapping and high  excited voices.

That may not work when sleeping, but might help during the day
