The charity's workshops show employers how to develop recruitment tests for the blind or partially sighted, help disabled graduates assess how they would do in such tests, and also aim to build confidence.

That's where the driving comes in.

At the workshop in August, Austin managed his first two rounds of the test-drive circuit relatively well. But on the third round, he crashed the pink Suzuki jeep into a wall.

"That was fun," he said as he emerged unscathed and smiling. "Can I have another go?"

His guide dog Nash was not so blase. As his owner drove around the course, he had to be taken for a walk to calm down.
