Ingredient Listings to Compare Foods
Ilghaus:
It will take a while but I am going to try to post the ingredient listing of at least the most popular KIBBLES being used by members here. The intent is not to promote one food over the other nor to say that in my opinion one food is better. If after a formula is posted and there is a change in that formula (foods are quite often changed in their updates) that someone notices please send me a PM so that I can also change it here.
I hope that by putting this list here it makes looking for a food that may not have a certain ingredient or in comparing two new potential foods easier. Sometimes we may have a dog that for one reason or other can no longer eat a certain protein and by having this list looking for foods without that particular protein quicker.
To start off the list I am going to post some of the general hints that are commonly given when people look into a new food for their dog. It too will take awhile to put together.
Since this listing will change from time to time be sure to go back to previous posts (that may have been modified) when using the listing.
The order of the food being listed is not based on quality or popularity but as I find them on the Internet.
Ilghaus:
~ Always pay close attention to the first five ingredients when comparing quality.
~ Two foods may contain meat but there is a difference if meat is listed in the first five or is #9.
~ Some foods will have two or three protein sources listed in their first five ingredients.
~ Pay attention to Calcium levels according to breed and age of your dog. (example: foods with Ca around 2% are considered high for larger breed puppies)
~ The ingredients in a food will change the protein, fat, and fiber content.
~ When comparing foods don't forget to check the calorie content.
~ All Life-Stages: Food formulated to meet the nutritional needs of a dog throughout the dog's life. (Some foods marketed as suitable for puppies may not be according to some food experts - example: Ca levels may be too high for some breeds.)
~ Don't forget that you always have the option to combine two or more formulas of the same brand of food or even mix two different brands together to formulate what is best for your particular dog. Maybe your dog does best on lamb but needs to take off a little weight. You may want to substitute some of the lamb food with some fish (usually lower calorie.)
